Year 9 English focuses on popular culture and thematic units. Students’ reading is appropriate to their ability; different novels for class study are offered for boy and girl readers, to support their differing interests. Students continue to improve their ability to write formally, while there is an increased emphasis on speaking and listening formally in debates and class presentations.
English at Year10 emphasises critical reading and formal writing skills in order to prepare students for VCE studies. Students have a wide choice of texts: whole class study of classical drama is based on student votes; students shop for, analyse and compare fictional or non-fictional texts based on their reading interests; film studies are based on student chosen extracts from modern films that they know well. Current, important issues are debated in student run discussion classes. Formal writing, with increasing emphasis on argument, style and vocabulary, is taught and assessed in each unit of work. Thematic studies, a portfolio of imaginative writing and needs based spelling and grammar instruction form part of a broad year of learning.
